Hi after using a rather cheap tripod for some moon shots and getting stupid amount of shake I need some help/advice on a replacement tripod for up to £200 one to support a D3 and a 70-200mm weight?

Any and all advised taken.

I use a Manfrotto 055XPROB which I have found fantastic. Its high enough to only have to extend the legs (so more sturdy) and I can use standing up (around 6ft).

Think the head depends on what you shoot. I take landscapes and use the 804 RC2 which is great for small adjustments.

Pretty sure you could get a combination for under £200.

Just found this code on camera price buster which might help for Jessops:

used a heavy manfrotto 055. Very heavy but works like a rock. Once I clipped a finger and it was sore for a whole day. That should speak the quality.
 
You obviously need a good tripod for all that weight, but a lot of the shake may not be actually caused by the tripod, have you tried a remote control or the self timer so you dont touch the camera?
To get a decent image of the moon you should underexposing by 1/2 to 1 stop with a large aperture and a shutter speed of at least 1/350 for a clear image.
Because of the way the earth and moon move, a slow shutter speeds will cause your moon photographs to look blurred too.

its a mine field the qwhole tripod thing.

I initially bought the 055 Pro (Manfrotto) which is aluminium (plus a tilt head. Its very heavy but I have total confidence it will stay firm and steady.

I recently bought a Gorillapod and ball head and they are fantastic for just hiking and travelling etc.

I agree 100% with remote control for shots though, reduces blur to next to nothing.
 
cheers guys really want to nail a near perfect moon shot something I have always wanted going to look into a remote control plus a new tripod too!

Redsnapper, but at 200mm on a D3, it's not going to be that big and detailed (unless you want it in context on a horizon).

I agree on the underexpose too.

Cheers Guys :thumbs: went for a Manfrotto pro in the end and a remote the next time the moon is looking good it's getting the full force of kit :clap:
