Trip to Ireland: 5D + 17-40 or 24-105?

Hi,

I'm going to Ireland with my wife for a few days and we'd like to travel as light as possible.
I thought I'd take the 50mm 1.4 for low light, but I'll take the 40mm 2.8 instead, since it's lighter and smaller (not so fast, though).

My question is about which zoom should I take, since there will be moments when I'm sure I'll miss the one that I've left home.

What's your opinion?

We'll make portraits and landscape photos.

I could go with the 40mm only and that would be an incredible light and good setup also.

So, what do you recommend?

40 plus 24-105 I say as this gives you a good range. Or even 17-40 and 24-105

I'd love to take them both, but I'll only take one. And I think it will be the 17-40 + 40.
I hope I don't regret it.

Which part of Ireland are you visiting..? I lived in Northern Ireland for nearly 50yrs.

I going to Dublin, today.

It's only for 4 days, so I'm not sure yet. I'd like to go to Belfast, but the south west seems so beautiful...
What do you recommend?

If you had more time I'd suggest doing a day trip to Galway. Beautiful county. I live in meath myself. About an hour west of Dublin.

Thank you all.
We're back to Portugal... again... :\

One of the 4 days in Ireland was to take a train from Dublin to Kilkenny to watch Bruce Springsteen's European Tournee ending concert. So, 3 days in Dublin was not much and we did not go anywhere else after all.
I guess we have to can back again, for sure.

I took the 17-40 and did not regret it. Sometimes I needed the 41-105, but many, many other I used the 17-23.

It was a good choice, considering I wanted to travel light.

Dublin is a very mixed bag. Some of it, outside the city, is nice, along to coast. but inland, a lot of it is just ... well, I'm not a huge fan of the City. It's got it's charms [mostly pubs] but theres so many skangers on every corner looking to steal or beg ... just like alot of euro cities I guess. It's a pity you didn't do a couple of days in Kilkenny, as that's nicer when you have time to get around it. The Medieval city.

I didn't feel that. Always perfectly safe, even at 2am (at least in my head).

Trust me, I go there a lot. I was only there other day. You may have been in one of the nicer areas. But there's a lot of things go on down those back alleys. Even in the heart of the city along the quays, I've seen people attacked in broad daylight.
