Hi.
I'm new to this so please bear with me!
I'm off to New York with my shiney new D7000 with the standard 18 - 105mm lens. I am about to buy a 10-24 lens (as I'm off the the Rockies too). Does anyone have any other recommends for essential extra kit I may regret not having?
I have polarising and UV filters as well as a stepped ND filters and my tripod.
I'm particularly interested in night time shoots and 'urban' life.
Any recommends would be gratefully received. I'm also interested in a walk about photo course if anyone can offer any suggestions?
Thanks in advance
KoA

You could wait and go to B and H photography! It's two floors of photography bliss and they have everything you could want, I was like a kid in a chocolate factory, I went last year and am jealous as sin, enjoy and hope you get some great shots.

So true about B & H, i was there in March past and it is a mental place.
I found my 18-55 and 10-20 lenses more than adequate for my trip, everything is big and wide!

Hi again and thanks for taking the time to reply. I will indeed be heading straight to B&H. I had hoped to pick up a Nikon 10-24 before the trip but it's out of stock where I am (Oman) so it gives me a good excuse to go and enjoy B&H. Just hope I dont end up spending too much !
Had considered sigma 10-20 and tamron 10-24 but Nikon reviews seem so much more consistent. It's a lot more money but at least I can be sure of the quality. Any thoughts?

I took a Sigma 10-20 and was perfectly happy with it, if anything the extra length on the 10-24 should help for more 'normal' perspective shots so it sounds like a good investment. I'd avoid the Tamron 10-24, not one of their best.

Don't forget spare memory cards, batteries, and an international mains adaptor for your battery charger.
Also, if you want to do long exposure night shots, a remote shutter release is good for preventing camera shake.

You could spend forever in B&H. It is a truly amazing place for photographic purchases.

If you're thinking about going to B&H, make sure you check their website for the opening hours and days they are closed. The owners are orthodox Jews and oberserve the sabbath and Jewish holidays.

Not photography related well could be go for a meal in New York Marriott Marquis revolving restaurant fab views of the city whilst you dine

Yes, I went up there and it was quite an experience, there's nothing quite like it! Great food and the slow turn (one per hour) lets you see all the big skyscrapers as they gradually enter your field of view. Never took my camera up there though for some reason :cuckoo:

don't over look the tokina, the never seen a bad review. Stunning wide angle which is solid and super sharp. And a 2.8 which the other lenses you mention arn't.

I have been to New York twice fantastic place apart from all the usual touristy places..try High Line elevated urban park.
The High Line Park currently runs from Gansevoort Street, three blocks below West 14th Street, in the Meatpacking District, up to 30th Street, through the neighborhood of Chelsea to the West Side Yard, near the Javits Convention Center. Although its been a couple of years since I have been..great for pics..

The food wasn't quite up to the views but the wine was nice!

My 28-105mm was fine for the trip.

I went in May, used a Sigma 10-20mm and 35mm for almost all of it. Check where you can/can't use the tripod if you're planning on taking one, you can't use one in many places.

Good point about the tripod. I am taking one but expect not to be able to use it in some places (top of the rock, Empire State). I'd like to try the rather cliche Times square at night shot though so will still get use out of the tripod. Anyone recommend other top locations for night shots?
The restaurant sound good too thanks. I think my daughter might enjoy it for the 13th birthday!

Brooklyn Bridge from Brooklyn Bridge Park during sunset/night is nice. Time the Rock/Empire State so you are up there just before sunset so you can get day and night shots.
