Morning all. Hope you all had a great Christmas.

Moveing on from this saga

I now need to replace my tripod.

Up to the theft I was using one of these:-

http://www.warehouseexpress.com/buy-manfrotto-055cxpro3-carbon-fibre-tripod/p1027600

Which was great for the lightness and sturdiness. Before I go away and order another I thought I would ask my friends on TP if there is a viable alternative. I don't need the height of the one in the link as I'm not that tall myself. I'd like one that I can get low to the ground with though.

I had a quick look at a Giottos one yesterday. It was this one:-

One thing I'd really like is a tripod that I can set the leg heights really quickly.

Any advice great appreciated.

I have the same Giottos one and really like it. I bought it with a Giottos balls head which I would not recommend since it is exhibits ball creep, which sounds like a painful affliction!

The tripod is great though I cannot comment on the Manfrotto in comparison as I haven't used it.

The tripod will happily hold my D700, Grip, 70-200 and SB900. I just need a better head.....

Just found the ball head I bought with it: Giottos MH1302-652 Series 2 Ball Head With Quick Release, which I would not recommend.

I've been visiting a few shops lately, looking for a new tripod.

I have pretty much decided upon the model you had stolen. It just looks, feels and works like a quality piece of kit.

WEll I use Uni-Loc one, Why because no matter where you shoot it will go in Water, mud or sand, as the leg do not go up inside but outside so nothing get inside.
Also has TWO platform centre column
useful for adding a second camera or accessory like a flash

Anyone else have any views on this - hoping to buy one in the next day or two.

Thanks all.

This was my problem I have been looking for advice on tripods and all people say giottos or manfroto no one ever says model numbers or gives reasons for that tripod.

I took the plunge on new years eve and ordered a manfrotto 055CXPRO4 from bristol cameras as they had an offer code for money off. I'm just waiting for it to arrive now. Im still undecided on a head for it, either the 460mg or the 322RC2 I may just get both and use one on the gorilla pod.

I got a Manfrotto 055XDB + Manfrotto 222 trigger head for Christmas. Nice and sturdy and on Special offer at £139 (possibly even £129 from Stuart and Digital Depot). Will hold the D700+24-70+sb800 without any hint of a slip.

That seems like a real bargain - nice one

In terms of my own dilemma, in the end I decided to gor for one of these:-

http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B001CAOV5M/ref=ox_ya_oh_product

The things I like about it are the way the the central column can be tilted at virtually any angle, the low level adapter and the minimum folded length - a bonus which seems to come with 4 section legs. It's a teeny bit heavier than the manfrotto I had before but other than that I'm really pleased with it. I recommend to anyone in the market for a Carbon Fibre tripod :)

In terms of the head I got another Acratech GV2 from Bob Rigby - best head I've ever used. Not cheap though

That looks like a top tripod! Hope you get everything sorted.
