Tripod and head for d90

Hi could any of you advise me on which tripod and head I should by for my camera. I have have the Nikon 18-105 and the 70-300 lenses and I am 5' 7" short

Ok, before you pile into buying a tripod ask yourself what you're likley to be photographing. If it's landscapes, long exposure stuff, or macro then yes you need one. However, if not then save the money. I bought a £300 manfrotto a couple of years ago and all I use it for is a coat hanger - not my greatest decision I admit as my style doesn't require a tripod - and for gods sake don't get me started on £80 or so I paid for a monopod which has no other use whatsoever.

Thanks Slaphead I would like mainly to get into doing motorsport photography (motorbikes) but will try my hand at other types of photography also.

If you are into Motorsports then a tripod will be of no use to you at all, you will need a monopod.

Not strictly true, a tripod can be a valuable accessory in all manners of photography, and is a must have thing even if it is just left in the car most of the time because eventually you will be struggling without it!


Also handy for throwing up a quick off camera flash!

Agree, I have quite a few tripods of various weights which I lug around up mountains for my landscape photography, but for motorsports I only ever use a monopod or hand held, so that you can follow the action quickly.
