Looking at getting a proper tripod and done a few searches here to find that most people seem to prefer ball heads.. from what I can read it seems that the only real benefits of a 3 way head is they are easier to keep level when panning.. The disadvantage of a ball head is you need a quality one to avoid it moving with the weight of the camera.

So it seems that a ball head would be easier to use / better overall or am I missing something ?

Thanks!

As you suggested, a ballhead is easier and quicker to use in most situations but a three-way head is probably better if you want to do very precise framing and speed isn't an issue.

Many ballheads have a panning function that is independent of the ball and socket.

Ballhead 100%! Unless you are a pro tog of course!

Whoops! I meant they would probably have both!!

I would happily replace my 3 way, with 3 way GEARED head, and maybe a QTVR head. I have time to set up for landscapes and precision is everything. Ballhead will go on a monopod when and if I get it.
