I use a Manfrotto 405 geared head which uses 410 quick release plates and wanted a solution to allow me to use Black Rapid straps without having to screw and unscrew the fastener. I know BR do the RC2 fit fastener but I thought it would be a good time to standardise all my tripod heads and plates.
I chose the Arca Swiss system as it is widely available, proven and is available for all formats.
With the purchase of an L Bracket and a plate for my 100-400 I now just needed to change my tripod heads. Hejnar supply a conversion kit for the 405, which I have on order and a Kirk 1.75 inch clamp fitted my travel tripod, a Gitzo Mountaineer with G1277M ball head.
That just left me with the Black Rapid. With those I ordered another couple of 1 inch Kirk clamps which screwed directly into the supplied fastener. Now when using the Black Rapid they clamp directly onto the L bracket, or the Arca plate on the 100-400, to use it on a tripod I just unclamp it from the BR clamp and put it straight onto the tripod. It works really well, I've done a full day using it with the 100-400 and a week long trip around Cyprus using it on the camera body and L bracket.
