My Dad recieved his 70-200mm Sigma today. He emailed me about the tripod collar as it appears a bit broken/wrong. I haven't seen it in the flesh yet, but it doesn't look like my lens does around the tripod collar (the knob seems to be missing). Heres the image he sent me

Any ideas for a fix? Are replacement parts available? I can't figure out why this is as it is - it seems the knob has been taken off? I thought I might aswell post it on here for you guys to look at because you tend to be pretty good with this sort of thing!!

Thanks,
Josh

Yeah, it makes some sense to return it, but for the sake of a small knob?! Ideally, we could just source a replacement knob from somewhere or perhaps the knob was removed for cleaning and forgot to put it back on, I'm hoping they can just get a spare knob TBH- much easier!! Is the knob actually removable? Or is it 100% stuck onto the collar, because it appears to have a clear thread where you could just screw the knob into, if a spare knob could be sourced could it just be screwed straight in and 'voilla'?

There is absolutely no reason to remove the knob for cleaning its not necessary. As for screwing in a new knob I don't have any idea. The best bet is to contact Sigma direct and send them your picture as above if thats the route you want to take. But personally I would send it back for a replacement/repair/refund

Emailed sigma and contacted shop. Awaiting replies- hopefully shop will be able to repair/send replacment knob.

If you buy anything new it makes so much sense to make use of the warranty that comes with it- after all its 99% of the reason to buy new- in my humble opinion! If you bodge it up it may be fine until it breaks again out of warranty when you will regret it.

I've sen the lens today and the collar is certainly wrong. Apparently he has had an email from the shop saying that they can exchange the tripod collar.

Anyone know how we could remove it? How do we detach it from the lens without the knob? :p

I'd send it back - if you attempt ANY repairs yourself the warranty will become invalid.

Yeah, he won't be repairing it for sure (my Dad is even less SIY friendly than me ), just swapping the collar- I think the guy possibly misunderstood his email, he wrote back saying, 'we will exchange the collar for you'? :bonk:

I told him just to ring the bloke and ask politely how to remove the collar!!

Get new collar sent

Take off knob on new colar

Affix to old collar

Remove old collar

Swap knob back

Yeah, thats what I though the ideal scenario would be, providing they will send collar without seeing lens first. My initial though was just for them to send a knob from the new collar. Then of course the problem there is if the actual collar on the lens is broken too... Hence the reason I've guessed they will send a replacement collar?

I'll keep you all updated...
