Tripod for Travel - Recommedations?

Hi everyone,

I'm looking to get myself a new tripod and struggling to pick one out of masses. I do alot of travelling soo I don't want anything too big and cumbersome.

manfrotto is of course very popular but there are soo many online its hard to work out which ones would be suitable. can anyone recommend any others?

Few requirements :

1. Lightweight would be nice
2. Good Travel size - ideally one that folds into something smaller
3. Budget £50-£100
4. Canon fit head

I know these are ebay finds but I like the look of these....

I haven't cracked this either but then the best ones -allegedly - are carbon fibre with prices to match. I think if you do a search, you will find a thread on this relatively recently. Good luck choosing...
 
I take a Benro travel angel away if flying, you can get the ally ones in budget, CF are dearer of course.
 
A friend of mine bought the first one in the link, and its a canny bit of kit.

Another vote for benro, from ebay, got a travel angel and a big gitzo copy, both very well put together, been using the travel angel for more than 3 years now.
 
I use a Gitzo GT1542T hands down the best tripod I have tried (way over your budget). The problem with the two you have posted is the first is heavy for any extensive travel at 1.7kg and the second is a great weight but looks like it would be blown over in the wind/flex badly. This is why the best travel tripods are so expensive they are super light and very sturdy. I had an aluminium Giottos one a few years back and all I can say is that it was so useless I didn't bother carrying it anywhere.

p.s for the record Gitzo supplied me with the tripod free of charge but that doesn't change my opinion :)

Strong, light, cheap - pick two. That's the way it is with tripods, travel ones especially so.

I can recommend the Benro Travel Angel also, I've had the Gitzo GT1541T and the equivalent Benro is as well built, if not better, for much less money.
 
Thanks for the all the advice! Will take a good look at the Benro Range. I travel alot so something which folds down would be ideal. In terms of quality the carbon fibre one in my 1st post looks very similar to the Benro one linked in this thread. Will dig a little deeper.

My current one is big and heavy but steady as a rock even in high winds

I agree for "serious" stuff then something sturdy is pretty much essential but often also completely impractical for some when on holidays etc, me included. There's certainly some compromise to be made but I think otherwise a tripod probably wouldn't get used. I have the Benro C2691 Travel Angel, and comparing the two side by side, the Bieke is slightly smaller in height and legs are thinner.Phil
 
I'm considering the one in the link below. However, reading the vendors feedback, it would appear that this product is despatched from China! I sent them an email on Saturday and asked if it was in stock in the UK and ready for despatch. At the time of posting, I have had no reply. If they come back and confirm that it is a UK stock item, I shall place my order.

It is viable to get lightweight and steady, unfortunately it comes at a cost.

My Gitzo G1227 only weighs 1.54 kg but I've used it with heavy kit, including medium format gear, without issue.

Let me know what they say on that , I believe it's the same company selling those in my original post and while they don't have the name to go with them in terms of looks and quality they look fairly decent for the money.

Thanks again for all the suggestions. I like that manfrotto Befree but again doesn't look too different from the Benro range and £50/60 notes more.

Have now received an email and they say that this item is in stock in the UK and ready for despatch.
