Has anyone bought one of these before? If so, what are they like?

Never tried one.

Tbh I think that a decent ball head would be a better option.
Fair enough they have knobs but once the preferred friction is set, it seems like they would work like this gadget .
In addition the locking knob on a ball head gives you the extra security ( if you choose to use it) that the camera doesn’t move.’´

I decided to go for the Manfrotto MHXPRO-BHQ2 ball head.

Thank you for all your advice
Check to see if the design is the same as the BHQ6, if so this is worth a watch.
I've seen this happen to someone and they fortunately got away with it.

Thank you for the video. At least I know what to look for so it doesn't happen to me.

To be honest, it's a pretty useless video. I don't wish to upset anyone (especially the person who is in the video) with my opinion, but come on now..........at least show the issue/problem on the video. If you watch from 3min 10sec - 3min 54sec - 4min 6sec - 4min 35sec you'll see he's not actually showing us anything!!!!

I do appreciate the heads up and I will be extra careful.
