tripod head

I use the Manfrotto 488 RC2 which although is not the lightest around, it is for me, the best compromise between weight and function. If you want one that is strong enough for longer lenses you will need to get a fairly bulky one.

As I use this with my Manfrotto 190CX-PRO4 carbon tripod, it sort of offsets the overall weight.

You don't give a budget or if you have a preference. Generally, ballheads are lighter, but you need to watch the maximum weight they can hold as they can 'creep' if the load is too heavy. Manfrotto are high quality as are Markins (very light, high quality, but expensive) and people here have a high regard for Redsnapper.
