I got myself a red snapper ball head the £30 odd one.
I did have a pan head (silk pro 700) but was tired of the weight and the setup time of inserting handles ect ect.
The ball-head weighs nothing and is ready to go in a second, is nice a sturdy and doesn't require alot of effort eith like my pan head. Its smooth and takes my 40d with a 70-200 L without even fliching.
Have I missed anything from my pan head nop, as it also pans so I'd recommend a ballhead if not the red snapper something else as long at i carries the weight of your kit.

Look for a Benro B1 - not the cheapest but good value for money.
