Tripod head

I am wondering what sort of tripod head would be mot suitable for me. I know a lot of people have ball heads, but there are other types.

I often do photography / video of the school choir and like to pan across the row. A smooth rotation would really help, but it needs to not go up/down as I'm doing that.

Any recommendations ~50GBP ??

I just bought one of these, very good, the switch on the side releases the top part when the rest of it is locked and is very smooth for panning, I use it for video and still photography,

Maybe a ball head isn't for you (the pistol grip still works on a ball head). You would probably be more suited to using a tilt and pan head, this allows you to freely pan whilst the tilt is locked..

Hi antihero, do you have that head? Is it smooth for panning? The qr plate is absolutely huge!

no Steven, I use a ball head myself, but that is a RedSnapper one so can vouch for the quality of their gear.

You can also get fluid movement panheads, http://www.warehouseexpress.com/fluid-video-heads/b3027?SortBy=BestSellerOrder&PageNum=1, but most of them aren't exactly cheap!
