I have a slik pro 5oo dx tripod bought from ebay. It is an early one and has a 360 swivel with 2 levers to tilt up and down and over on its side.
My question is, when on its side, there seems no way to then tilt the camera up or down without swivelling it on the screw on base. Is there something I am doing wrong, or is there a gadget I need to enable me to tilt the camera up or down in portrait mode?

I have a Manfrotto head ( 804RC2) with 3 levers and 360 degree so I can get the camera in any position, so I suspect your head does have some limitations. Cost around £50

That looks more like what I need.
Newby question, can I put any brand 3 way head on my silk? Can I even change just the head?

Yep any brand. I have various slik / manfrotto leg / head combinations.

If your Slik is like my 700DX legs then the screw on top of the tripod can be turned around so you have 2 thread size options for fixing the head.

Check the thread size to which the head attaches to , but most will fit and if not there are screw thread adaptors on the market. Not having a Slick tripod I can't answer that

A little bit of research on your tripod and the chosen head via the internet should answer your question. Hope this is of some help
