tripod ring mounts (lens collar)

Hello thread followers. I'm Gerry and just registered with Talk Photography this morning. This is my first ever thread.

Does any one of know of a tripod ring mount for a lens whose fixed body diameter is 58mm? Just for clarity I'm seeking one of those collar type rings that encircle a telephoto lens to provide a tripod mount at a better more forward balance point than the camera body.

Canon do a series of these items but the smallest diameter they do seems to be 65mm - too big for me.
 
What lens is it for? Not all lenses requir a mount like this. It's mainly for heavy telephotos.
 
I think Kirk does a couple from emory, but not sure what diameters they'll be :)

What lens is it? If it's a lens that isn't designed to be mounted on a tripod like that then there could be issues, especially around the lens mount, as the weight of the cam era could damage it. Also, if it's a push/pull zoom then a mounting ring could affect the zoom range and/or the focussing.

It is indeed for a very old telephoto zoom lens 85 - 210 mm that I picked up for a song on ebay. Specifically the lens is an ancient Sun lens that seems to be made from iron and glass and therefore weighs a ton making the kit front heavy. While the lens is ancient it is a great performer when attached via an adapter to my brand new Fujifilm X-E1.

Thanks for this - can you see my reply to John? The lens has a segment that is clear of all the manual rings and is about 300mm wide so will take a collar without interfering with the controls. Interestingly this lens's zoom movement is completely internal so the lens does not change its external length when zooming. Thus it doesn't act like an air pump and suck in dust and muck. It's just very heavy and needs supporting for good long shots.
 
The fact it doesn't have external moving parts is a bonus :)

Just thinking... if you can get a tripod ring that's pretty much a fit, you could line the inside with some of that grippy rubber/foam to increase the fit. Not sure if it's hold it totally solid though. Sounds like a big old lens...

Yeah....I'm coming to that conclusion myself. The challenge is to find a best fit collar to reduce to a minimum the thickness of the padding - it looks as though that will be about 65mm ring width with padding of 7mm on the diameter - my old O-level maths will come in handy !!!!

Hi, I did something like this for a tamron lens and found that self adhesive felt (that you put on furniture legs to stop it scratching floors) did the job nicely. You can get it in sheets to cut to size, it's cheap and has enough compression to give a snug fit without letting the lens wobble in the collar.
 
Lakeland (Plastics, the cook and homewares shop) do some good thick felt pads - IIRC, they come as a mixed pack with different sized circular pads and a square to cut to size.
 
I had a similar issue with a missing tripod collar for my nikon 300mm F4.5.

I grabbed a cheap copy of the tripod collar for a canon 300mm F4 and bushed it out by cutting the right sized piece from a cheap 6mm thick 99p mouse mat from poundland, the mouse mat has a neoprene construction but with a cloth front, this is ideal as putting the cloth side so it contacts the lens means you can still rotate the lens in the collar easily.

All in it cost me under £10 to sort and is a solid as rock.
 
Hey Chaps - what fabulous help you've all been. I'm halfway to solving it by buying a cheap too big ring from Hong Kong for a fiver and will carve up a mouse mat and various bits of other packing material to fil the gap.
