Hi

I bought a traveller tripod from amazon with rubber feet which screw back to reveal spikes.

Now the metal parts of the feet have rusted. The first time using the tripod was on a wet beach, do i am thinking it was the salt water that has caused this to happen.

Is there a way to stop this from happening?
 
only by cleaning it in fresh water after use - or replacing the spikes with marine grade stainless steel - will still need rinsing after though .
 
I use 'White Lightening' on my tripod and monopod, it leaves a waxy deposit on threads etc and protects it from most corrosion. You can buy it from bike shops.
 
Don't get them wet in the future, and if you do - dry them. :)
You'll probably have to use some wire wool to clean the rust off. I'd wipe (sparingly) the metal spikes with oil to stop any future rust,
but it only works for a while.
 
Salt water is the worst... will also cause corrosion!

Parts can be replaced with stainless steel bits.
Can be painted black and baked in oven to harden the paint, or instead you can brush the steel with hydrochloric acid to blacken it. Wash in water afterwards, please!

I have, in the past, used condoms (unused ;) ) to cover the bottom of the legs/feet if I was on wet ground!
I know it sounds really, really odd.. but it works!

and they can be used again! (not for their proper use haha)
 
As advised, after immersion in salt water, rinse thoroughly with clean water, dry and treat with some kind of light oil.
WD40 is a good water repellent, but nothing will stand up to sea water.
(The letters "WD" stand for Water Displacement.)
