Tripod? Spoilt For Choice

Hi Everyone,

I'm looking for some advice on a tripod. I have searched the TP forums and haven't really found what i'm looking for. I'm after a strong and very durable tripod that has twist/secure legs. It doesn't have to be really light weight, It doesn't have to come with a head, but i'm looking for a ball head with quick release and that has three axis control. I am just about to buy a Black Rapid RS7 + FastenR-T1 so if the quick release plate can fit this in, then it's an absolute bonus. I have a budget of around £300.

Here are some tripods that I took my interest.

Giottos MT8240B Carbon Fibre Travel Tripod - £174.99
+
Giottos MH1311-652 Ball Head - £74.99

Vanguard Alta Pro 283CT Carbon Fibre Tripod - £269.95

3LT X1 Brian Carbon Fiber Tripod Kit - £269

I really like the flexibility of the Vanguard one, but with a head it's going to cost well over £300, probably looking at around £350.


What are your thoughts? Any advice or recommendations would be appreciated. Thank you :thumbs:

The FastenR-T1 won't work with the Giottos 652 QR plate... unless you get the Dremel out like I did :)
 
As is always mentioned here, go to your friendly camera shop, take your kit with you and give them a try. You ask 20 togs here which is the best tripod and you will get 20 different answers.

FYI I have a Manfrotto as my main trypod and a slik 700 as my back up, both great for what I need, strong with no fear of them toppling over.

Manfrotto make fantastic tripods and heads 055xprob is fantastic.

There great deals on the Internet at the usual sites

Can you name a UK camera shop that carries 3LT, Redsnapper, Vanguard, Benro, Induro, Feisol and Giotto?

No, I thought not.

What about any two of those? Still a no, eh?

What about anything apart from Manfrotto plus own-brand/other cheap 'n' nasty?

I'm lucky enough to live close to Park Cameras, where I can try out a limited range of Monfrotto, Gitzo and Slik. I don't think I've ever been in a store with a larger selection.

Which one is that Frank, the one in Haywards Heath looked shut up last time I passed through.
 
i'll be keeping an eye on this thread as my old tripod is showing major signs of wear and usage, including a big dent that stops one of the legs retracting more than 50% of the way!
