Tripod suggestions

I'm borrowing someone's tripod at the moment and already know that I need to get myself one.

I don't want to spend too much money, so wonder if anyone can suggest a decent sturdy tripod that won't cost me the earth?

I was going to suggest Redsnapper as a great value product, but even that is over your budget... You have to remember the value of the item you are entrusting to your tripod :shrug:

+1 mate i wouldn't want to put my £800 body and my £400 pound lens on a £40 tripod. i saw the op has a 600d which is nearly £400 and dont know what lens he has but i have a red snapper RS-284 and the RSH-12 Head love it so stable

sorry to say that but for £20-£40 you won't get a tripod... i mean tripod which you could trust :)
 
The one I've suggested is sturdy, weighs about 3kgs, has loads of features and will not drop your camera all for £50.
It has a detachable head
Spirit level
Spike feet
Swivel feet
Trust me you will not find a better tripod for the money
 
Mike if you're not looking to spend too much then perhaps the way to go would be to look at the sales forum here. Just make sure that the tripod will handle the combined weight of your gear, meaning the camera, lens ( and perhaps flash ) you may wish to mount on it.

Hi guys...

Thanks very much for the feedback and suggestions. I think it's overly clear by now that I've only just started on this money-pit of a hobby and didnt realise that you need to 'up' the budget a little to get what you need.

mike_6480 is right in that i dont have access to the classifieds yet, so can't see what is available to me. But I'd rather up my budget than settle for something cheap and nasty.

I purchased a Manfrotto 055 on ebay in great condition for £35. I had to bid on about 50 or 60 different ones over a period of months, but got there in the end. I can vouch for a Redsnapper head as well.

I myself invested in a camlink tripod as I wanted a cheap tripod to get me started. Trust me when I say that the flexibility of the more expensive ones is MORE than worth it!

To put it in perspective, I bought my Camlink tripod for £24, my current tripod consists of the following:-

1 x Manfrotto 190XPROB (Fully Adjustable): £30 from here in the forums
1 x Manfrotte Ballhead, extremely sturdy but no QR plate so the camera at present screws onto the ballhead mount, it is an older model but cost all of £20.

So total cost was £50, and I now have a tripod that is sturdy and solid, flexible with the leg adjustment angles and does not worry me when I put my D90 + Grip + 80-200 2.8 on it!! :thumbs:

If you can wait it out for a bit longer then simply check the classifieds section of TP and eBay regularly and you can pickup a similar deal I would of thought. :)
 
I'd been looking at tripod's for a while and like you,didn't want to spend a lot.

It does just about anything I've seen the more expensive tripods do. Its tall, sturdy, I like the idea of spikes or rubber feet,you can even reverse the column for macro :thumbs:

Believe me, I looked at loads, but for the money(being the key thing here) I think this is an excellent buy and I'm happy to recommend :thumbs:

It's a great handy tripod! I got this one free as a subscriber gift to practical photographer magazine on an offer of £5 for three months editions! I've seen the offer a couple of times so worth keeping a look out!
 
Hello Mike,
I have to say I agree with the general sentiment here that £40 goes nowhere tripod wise.
When I worked in a photo shop, many years ago, people would come and ask me which tripod they should buy for £50 and I would always say a filter.
The reason is if you have £50 to spend on kit a filler(s) will have a much bigger impact on the quality of your photographs than a cheap tripod, unless you get lucky second-hand of course!
