After a trip to Switzerland and doing a lot of walking and hiking with the camera and tripod, I need to find a lightweight tripod. Even something half the size of a standard tripod.

I have a couple of other trips planned, beginning of June is into the Pyrenees (3000m+), September into the Alps (4000m+) and then November/December is a 15 day hike to 5300m+ - Everest Base camp :D

Have you thought about a monopod ? (you can also get treking pole adaptors but ive never used one of those so i dont know how good they are)

or just a bean bag ? (incidentally if you do get a bean bag get one with a zip or two so you can fly with it empty and fill it up with locally bought pulses on arival. )

monopod is out, as I like long exposure shots ;) have one and never use it.

bean bag might work.... would ideally like something a little bigger, but will keep it (and your suggestion) in mind.

I get the missus to make up my bean bags to spec so i can have them as big as i like - Ive got a massive long one that goes under the 170-500, or can get doubled over under just the end of the lens if i want more freedom to pan - ive also had saddle bag ends added so i can drape them over rocks, branches, over the car window etc.

Aluminium. It's still light though at just 1.1kg and mine supposedely supports up to 4kgs, even though the max I ever use on it is around 3kgs and it seems fine with that much weight on it. The build quality is excellent as well.
 
If you must take the D3, which doesn't seem like the obvious choice for what sounds like moutaineering (D300?) then I would pop it on a carbon Benro Travel Angel. Tons of choice here - recommended supplier http://stores.ebay.com/DCs-Photography-Store Or a Gitzo if price isn't a problem, or one of the other Chinese Traveller clones - Triopo, Feisol, Giottos.

TBH, I would forget the DSLR and go super-light with something like a Pano GF1 and a pocket tripod like this little Manfrotto (which is always in my bag) http://www.parkcameras.com/19309/Ma...ogle&utm_medium=froogle&utm_campaign=pid19309 But then I'm a pretty light-weight hiker myself :D

Of course I must :D 1st reason is the battery life... battery life on the D3 is supposed to 3x the D300 and the D3 does not feel that heavy. Batteries are also terrible at holding charge in the cold, which it will be up there. 2nd reason is the lovely 17-35mm lens I have :)

Missus will be carrying the EP1 or a small video camera, still deciding on that one.
