Any thoughts on the Hama star tripods? Found them on amazon for sub £20 it won't be used loads to needs to be decent build quality.... Any advise would be welcome thanks... Open to there brands
 
It's not easy to offer advice without knowing what you intend to stick on top of it, Steve.

I have a Hama Star tripod. Shocking build quality, avoid!

The legs are acceptable and usable, what really lets it down is the head, it is made of lowest quality plastic that can't be relied upon.

Try your best to get a tripod with changeable head, the legs is easy to get stable and usually not an issue, the head is the interface between you and camera. A bad head will ruin your good mood while a good head is reliable and a pleasure to use.

I paid over £150 for my Tripod and a further £80 for the head :eek:

What sort of quality do you expect for under £20 :shrug:

Do yourself a favour, buy the best you can afford, is my advice, have a look at Manfrotto

It's not worth faffing about with cheap pods (trust me)..

I'v got a Redsnapper with a Manfrotto 410 head and it'll last forever.

Buy cheap, buy twice.
 
get a decent tripod , i use a manfrotto , that has never let me down, i have never had a red snpper so cant comment, a cheep ripod is fine as a backup , , but not to be trusted , the build quality , can be shaky

Thanks for you advise, will take a look at manfrotto and red snapper range....
 
Looking at the tripods... I don't know what would best suit my needs... Reading thru the the forum to eliminate camera shake an also get good landscape shots a tripod is a must... Is it wise to buy a tripod with a head? 2way or 3way there's so many out there, I'm looking to spend around £100-£130 if anyone can suggest a model to go for... Thanks.
 
for that money, something like this is what you need Tripod and a ball head tends to be the best option....
Redsnapper on here is very popular

You can buy tripod legs on their own and choose a head to go atop of it, or buy a bundle together.

When you get one try and avoid using the centre column, even on really expensive tripods they are a last resort, they reduce stability.

Head choice is personal, most people choose between a ball head (quick and easy to adjust) or a three way (slower but more precise). I like geared heads for landscapes but they're outside of your budget for the moment, the modularity of tripods means that further down the line you might swap heads and keep your existing legs, or vice versa.

I'd keep an eye out for a Manfrotto 190 for your budget, good and solid, will last a long time, and when you decide to upgrade you'll get a good percentage of the money back. Also look at ebay, I picked up a Carbon Fibre Gitzo for use when travelling for not much over £100, it is strong, light and much better value than a new but lesser tripod IMO.
