Tripods and hold luggage

I am flying off on holiday soon. My tripod is too big to go into my case. Could I tie it onto my case and put it in the hold? Or do I invest in a smaller travel tripod that will fit? and if so, which one?

Then, it would be good to know what tripod you have, so we know which one is smaller than that one.
Also, if we are to recommend a smaller tripod, it would be good to know what kit you have because of the max weight to be put on top of the small tripod.

Okay dokaey. i currently have a Manfrotto carbon fibre one - 190CXPRO3 I think. My camera is a Nikon D3100 with standard lens. Just for landscapes. Case is approx. 18inches long internally. Thanks

I'd get a bigger case, cheaper than buying a new quality tripod. My Manfrotto 190ProB fits in my case diagonally, with the ball head on turned 90 degrees.
