tripods.. how actually do they work?

not meaning whats their use but rather there are many different legs and heads. Are they interchangeable or a type of head has to go with a type of leg?
Could u keep just the legs but yet upgrade the head?
and whats the use of teh separate adapters? are they compatible with all heads?

Is an average 100 pound head and legs any good or dissapionting? I saw a Giotto at 99P quit the price but does the buy cheap buy twice apply to such tripod?

Indeed, and some of the lazy gits are ****** heavy too, especially with a 'blad on top!
