Hello,

I am looking for a good quality sturdy tripod. I have a giottos travel tripod with a ball head that I use for travelling with as its extremely compact and lightweight, however I have recently started doing a bit of costal photography/seascapes etc and it just doesnt have the mass to hold its self steady for a long exposure when there is a hint of a sea breeze. I'm not looking for anything incredibly lighweight or carbon etc. I just want something which is really stable and quite flexible with positions. Have heard good reviews of the manfrotto 055pro and 190pro?

Manfrotto 055 would fit the bill, iv'e got an ages old one and its still fully functional.

Another good reason to buy is the availability of spare parts, can virtually rebuild them should anything fail

Why not have a look at the Giotto range with the horizontal centre columm ie MTL9351B... A lot cheaper than the manfrotto's....

My new carbon fibre vanguard alta is much, much better than either the redsnapper or giottos I have owned.

Found my redsnapper not all that great TBH but for the money it's ok.

My Gitzo fits the bill perfectly for me, didn't cost that much second hand either, about £150. The head cost more than the legs did.
 
Manfrotto 055CX03 is a brilliant tripod. I have found it to be light yet extremely sturdy.

I notice that the OP mentions land/seascape photography. Personally speaking I have found ball heads to be less than perfect for this type of togging. A 3 way head is much better for getting that horizon level so why not look at the Manfrotto 410 junior geared head or, if that is too dear, try the 804RC2.

By the sounds of it the 055cx03 and 410 head would be my perfect combination, however I can't justify nearly £400 as I am saving for a 4month travelling trip :naughty:

I've only used it just the once since I got it last year & it sits in its tripod carry case :$

It does me for height wise (6'3) I was looking at the manfrotto 190/055 but the giotto done virtually the same job with the horizontal columm for a lot less money...

I did have the giotto ball head (6kg) but as I had a manfrotto monopod it was easier to have two manfrotto heads mainly for the quick release plate..

Other reason I got that one was it was a lot cheaper, done the same & if I weren't to use it than I didn't spend shed loads of money on something that I wouldn't really use - coming to think of it that boils down to all my gear :lol:
