Tripods - opinions?

Seems sensible enough, I wholeheartedly agree with the first paragraph.

Quite a bizarre article really. It's basically saying don't use a tripod unless it's necessary. Well duh! I don't know anyone who would use a tripod unless it was necessary. I know I'm being flippant and a little simplistic, but I just don't get the point of articles like that. Sounds like someone with an axe to grind to me.

I see plenty of people out and about using tripods in bright daylight ...

Thats possibly the worst idea I have heard, so when I go out with my 500 i`m supposed to hand hold it :nono:.

Only use a tripod for still subjects either at night or when you need long shutter speeds of about 1/60 or slower.

It looks a little more than a money making page...more than enough clicky links in there.

Seems KR has forgotton about Macro photography completly. I would love to see him trying to take a photo of a minute subject without one.

The opening of the article is full of silly generalisations, like you only get slow shutter speeds at f22 in day light clearly the man has never been out on a grey november day in Sheffield! I'd also like to see him hand hold a 200mm lens and produce consistent results at 1/60. Sometimes old Ken talk sense other times he spouts nonsense, somehow he's managed to become an online photo celebrety yet nobody really talks about his pictures.

It's a pure sales page written with "content is king" in mind, although he may find that Big G may well penalise him for having too many outbound links from the page.

I must agree though that the 808RC4 is a cracking 3 way head even if the missus thinks it gets heavy to carry after a few miles. :D

What a very strange article..........

No no no you cannot go against the will and knowledge of the great krock.

He knows all and just cannot be wrong.

You will all perish horribly.

so there.

I don't see the problem with using any support in daylight to be honest - why run the risk of getting bad results? I know I can't always successfully handhold my 200mm without having a shutter speed of 1/500 or quicker, and I'll quite often use my tripod as a tri-monopod.

Don't forget though - Mr Rockwell lives in SUNNY California - they generally get a lot more sunlight than we do....
