Yes
I bought yonguo flash yn460ii , and finally got round to having a go with it after it being sat in my storage for ages.

It fires up, test fires and flashes, and adjusts intensity, all good.

I attach it to my 40d, but my 40d is saying that the flash is either off or incompatible....

where am I going wrong?

I thought this would work with my 40d ?

I've never used a flash with my 40d, but i've seen it working with one when I bought it.

I set the yongnuoe to manual, and set the intensity I wanted
I also shoot in manual, so I set my camera exposure etc to what I wanted to account for the flash.

But the flash just doesn't fire.

Is the camera problem, flash problem or both ?

That flash is a "dumb flash." Manual only and it should work w/ just about any camera/hotshoe. I'm guessing you have the camera set so that it is attempting to use the flash as TTL, and it can't because the flash doesn't have that capability.
I don't use Canon so I can't be more specific, but there should be a camera menu setting where you set the flash communication/mode to manual.... I would bet it's in the owner's manual...
