Trying some new effects in Lightroom

These were taken on a recent walk in London's Hyde Park. At one end of the Serpentine, the gardeners were removing excess algae from the lake. On the way back I noticed the boat hire people out on the decking with their gaff hooks. Both were taken with my Canon 40D with the EF 50mm f/1.8 (nifty fifty) attached.

Sorry but for me they don't work, nice pics, but the editing is OTT for my liking, sorry.

I like the first one, it just sort of "grabs" the eye. The second one has just a bit too much contrast for me, with the loss of detail.
