trying to get pin shart images

hello,

i have a d100 nikon
and my images are not pin sharp

sometime when i autofocus - i find that its always appox too long
if i go back slightly after auto focus its better / sharper

is there any way of adjusting the focus in camera / lens???

some of my photo's are slightly out of focus

but i have noticed that when i autofocus on a point say 2foot away
its ok - but if i lock the foucs and
then pull away appox 2 inchs - it becomes sharper

i'll tripod up the camera tomorrow and measure the distance the lens says to lengh
from camera to wall
 
Are these "real pictures" or test shots.

Remember AF uses contrast to focus, if you are testing on a painted wall tehre may not be enough contrasting light for the AF to lock on.
