Ttl metering on d700 gone wrong?

Not sure if I have done something, nudged a setting or what! Basically half way through an impromptu shoot a few weeks ago, my D700 fitted with Nissin di662 suddenly started underpowering the flash. One minute everything was fine, next everything shot is way too dark. Sticking the flash on manual and I can get it to blow the exposure no effort. Sticking the flash on a D60 and it exposes perfectly, so the flash is fine! Any ideas? D700 is brand new so I'm not fully up to speed and may well have nudged something.
 
Have you or a friend got another flash you can try on your D700 or can you try the flash on another D700?
 
You need to post an example shot or ideally one from each camera with the exif intact, then we can have a look and see what the problem is
 
okies, just a very quick couple of snaps, tried to keep things relatively consistent from one camera t'other:

First, D60. on relfection I actually think this underexposed very slightly, I could however dial that out quite easily with compensation!

You haven't accidentally put the Nissin into manual mode by any chance?

D60 - Flash: Flash, Auto, Return Detected

D700 -Flash: Flash, Compulsory, Return Detected

I think that means "compulsory flash suppression", although I could be wrong...

By below f4 do you mean a smaller aperture (f5.6, f8 etc) or a smaller f number (f2.8, f1.4 etc)?
 
Just a thought, but could you post the the photos from the time when you first noticed the issue, the last shot that was ok and the first one that was underpowered...
 
It could be to do with your metering mode - try matrix metering rather than spot - Both these shots are under exposed although the D700 is worse.
 
I think the easiest thing to do would be a reset on the D700, as that appears to be where the problem lies, and see if that cures it.
 
Are exposures without flash ok?
What flash settings are you using on the camera - is the camera set to front-curtain sync?
 
Can you borrow a Nikon flashgun against using a 3rd party flash? I am always wary of not using approved manufactures gear. On the exif data it says " FlashFunction: False" so it looks like a connection problem.
Have you tried cleaning the hot shoe contacts? Or try using the flashgun as a remote and see the results.

Tried using a SB900, SB600, SB800, same unpredictable results! I've just tried a couple of different lenses, one gave similar results (boggo 18-70 F3.5-4.5) but the 50mm F1.8 gave an absolute identical result with both cameras, perfect result!... it just gets more and more confusing LOL.

Just to make matters a little more interesting, I popped into town and went to the shop I bought the camera. They put an SB900 on a completely different D700 and to be honest that looked somewhat underexposed as well!
