Hi guys,

I was installing artificial grass on my front lawn and have instead changed my mind and decided to go with real turf. I don't know too much about the different variants though but my five year old will have football goals set up on it so I'm wondering if anyone could recommend a turf that's hard wearing enough for a play area?

Regards

Scott

Hi Scott, Don't worry too much about the type of turf you lay, the most important factor in how hard wearing it is will be determined by how well it's requirements are met.

Any good quality 'general purpose' turf from a reputable supplier correctly laid on a suitable surface and subsequently maintained well will thrive and be more than hard wearing enough for a youngster's play area. Conversely, a more expensive turf in the wrong place (too shady or dry usually) won't work.

Get a good quality turf from a supplier local to you and make sure it's laid properly etc and you won't go wrong.

I asked a local supplier what would be best and how to prepare for it and went with that - its the first thing I have ever done in my garden that has lived !

Pretty much any turf you'll find at a normal garden centre will be general purpose utility mix in terms of grass species. More esoteric varieties are available for specialised applications but "off the shelf" (or, more likely pallet!) rolls will do what the OP wants. If possible, find out when the garden centre gets fresh deliveries - rolls that have spend a while drying out will struggle a bit compared to freshly cut stuff.

Like home decoration, preparation of the surface that's to be turfed is pretty important and will speed up the lawn's return to usability.

Oops seems have gone around in a circle. Back to fake grass.

Have natural grass if you want, but be under no illusion that it involves a great deal more maintenance than fake grass.
After 40 years of maintaining natural grass lawns I put down fake grass 3 years ago. All lawn related tools went into the bins. Wished I had done it sooner. Only minimal care work is needed and it always looks good.

Grass lawn + goals + kids jumping about = a mess of a lawn etc.

Artificial grass looks great...when it's laid well.
When it's not, it looks atrocious.

That's my view too. The guy who came with all the supplies of artificial turf showed me the way it had to be laid with the shoots facing into the house. This looked great but from the roadside it looks cheap. Real grass looks good from any angle in my opinion.
