Being a bit of a numpty when it comes to TV technology, not sure which way to go.

My Liteon HD recorder has gone t**s up so want to replace the machine.

First question-because we can't receive freeserve in Otley, we have freesat from Sky-i.e. a sky box with all the free channels without sky subscription service. I'd like to keep this, therefore would a new HD recorder that states it has two tuners be able to record two sky channels at the same time-or watch one and record another.

Second, would the EPG on the machine work with the sky box.

Third, any other options-I could upgrade to a sky+ box, but don't really want to be tied into a monthly subscription with sky.

Fourth-any recommendations, without baffling me completely.

Fifth-would I be better throwing the lot in the bin?

Sounds like what you want is to dump the sky box in the bin and pick up a HUMAX Freesat PVR or similar , try looking on www.avforums.com for more indepth advice/
 
It won't record 2 sky channels, you need a dish with a quad LNB and even then it's only Sky+ that can record 2 sky channels.

The freesat HD receivers would probably be your best bet, there are new ones coming out that have a PVR built into them, you already have the dish so it's just a matter of swapping the boxes over
 
Ive just added One of these to my ever growing media recording setup... I know its a single tuner, but there is nothing to stop you plugging 2 into a system... Any fairly modern Windows PC can act as a PVR for 2x DVB-S sources. :)

I would get a Freesat HD box, but ive not enough room under the telly for another box, so for me a computer based solution is easier... Tivo, Sky+, DVD, Freeview and Amp, then with the computer having 2x dual DVB-T tuners and a DVB-S tuner means i can record 8 programs at once.

Looked at AVforums, but they all seem to talk in speach-geek-which is way beyond me? :)

Thanks wack-so if I bought a freesat HD receiver-would I be able to record 2 programmmes? using my current sky dish?

Wooooah Darryn, I'm not that ambitious ;)

2 channels would be enough :)
 
The vast majority of PVR HD boxes will only record from their internal tuner. If you did find one that records from the SCART socket (double check, the shops talk out their ****) it will only be able to record the sky programme you're watching.

I'd go for a Freesat PVR box, probably cheaper & less complicated :)





*I've got a Virgin V+ box, you can record two channels while watching/pausing a third, it spoils you rotten :lol:
