Hi Neil, I really like the composition on the 1st, and think the mono conversion works well. I'm not as keen on the 2nd, I think the palm at the front is a bit distracting and dominating
 
Like them both, the framing is great in the first one with the deck leading to the center making the ferry look huge. But its the second for me i think, something about it i really like, it screams Egypt. I would have liked to see them larger though.

Personally I think the palm tree adds to the composition.

I tried no 2 in colour but it just seemed better in mono to me.

#2 seems like a 1920s shot of the pyramids as they were discovering everything, I like it!
