Ugh, I need help choosing a compact

The S90 is a new kid on the block but I'd go for the LX3, for the wide and fast lens. Stretch the cash a bit more for a GF1?

i have a g9 so i expect the g11 is even better

i think its a great camera i use it as a back up to my d700 or when travelling light.
its also great for videos when i am photographing bands.the quality is very good.

I have the LX3, and if you don't mind the very short zoom range it's fantastic. I'd say it's more coat pocket than trouser pocket but I find it superb. The HD video is excellent too.

I spent weeks debating this subject.

The G11 was simply too big for me, your meant to be getting a compact to take everywhere when you dont want to carry a DSLR. The G11 didn't fit the bill.

So it was between the S90 and the LX3.

I spent weeks debating this but chose the S90, ultimately the smaller form won it for me, The fact that the LX3 will be replaced soon also made me it seem like a wise choice not to go for.

I am very pleased with it plus it also uses same sensor as G11.

G9 or G10 are the best I have played with in the compact range, the Lumix series is also god but feel a little cheap n nasty in your hands.

Good Luck

I was also thinking about this, having seen what the interesting Mr Rockwell has said, the S90 looks good but also the G11.

Want it partly for the wife to use (so basically a P&S) and also for me when I cant be bothered to take the D300 out and that I can set aperture myself, take RAW etc...

Not used a G11 but had a G10 that i used for about 400 shots & then sold it, Handling was very nice & camera felt very solid but the zoom lens sucks dust like a hoover  & the dreaded dust bunnies were starting to show especially in even toned skies I now use a Lx3 for 90% of my photography & love it.

Have you considered the Sigma DP1s? £299 brand new, just released. Maybe not to everyone's taste, but full manual control and a nice big sensor! :D

Its down to the LX3 or G11

Would you really be happy with one of these? I looked at a G11 and except for the cost, it wasn't doing it for me.

I would have to agree with that, I had a play with a GF1 in Pc World, It's an Lx3 on steroids & felt beautifull in the hands but the debit card wouldn't take any more strain YET.

You are joking right? I played with the G11 and it felt very plasticy to me, was uncomfortable and bulky. It felt like a toy if i'm honest. It is however superb at the job it was designed to do and i liked the manual dials for easy set up. I would have bought it for the IQ and put up with the feel if the GF1 and EP1 were not an option.

The Lumix range to me feels of very high quality and solidly built especially the GF1. Saying this before i handled either cameras i was going to plumb for the Canon as i do like Canon stuff and on paper it fitted the bill but after seeing the Lumix it was an easy decision! The GF1 is the highest quality camera i have ever handled closely winning over the Olympus EP1.

This is of coarse is just my opinion and means nothing!

Have a play and feel the camera in your hand. If the G11 is the one that sits in your hand comfortably and you can see yourself enjoying it then go for it!

Im almost tempted by the GF1, i'll be getting it in the states so it might be cheaper. It has detachable lenses right? Can it still be a good compact?

the Lumix series is also god

I love my LX2 but I'd not go quite that far. ;)

The LX cameras are the best compacts that I've handled and the 2 was the one that finally got me to part with cash after years of waiting for a pocketable machine with acceptable image quality.

I've put it up for sale here now that I've got the GF1 but they don't actually overlap as well as you'd think. The GF1 is a fab bit of kit and it's light and small enough to not put you off taking it out with you but it's not a compact with the 20mm lens, let alone with LX type zoom range.

If you want something for the pocket that you can forget you're carrying, I'd go LX over GF1.

Winner for me was control over DoF with the GF1. I have just the 20mm f/1.7 and use the camera almost exclusively in high contrast mono. The idea being to shoot jpeg 99% of the time using in camera processing so that all I do is download the pics and enjoy. Since getting it just before christmas, I've not used it as much as I thought (I still used my 5D over chrimbo with family etc as most was home based), but I am hoping it will come into it's own over the summer on day trips with the kiddies etc.

It fits in a coat pocket but not your trousers. If it does you won't be short of womens phone numbers!!!!!:D :D

You were originally looking for a P & S now you are considering the GF1 which is really a small SLR (size wise). Before you know where you are you will be buying extra lenes and will have even more to carry.

Anyone rate the Panasonic TZ7? I'm interested in a point and shoot for holidays.

I bought a Panny Lumix TZ6 from a member on here and TBH I am delighted with the quality of the pictures, features, and the solid feel of it. As a point and shoot I would sure reccomend it. I am unsure about the TZ7, from what I understand they are both much the same except for a movi feature on the 7. I havent looked up the spec so I could be a mile out though. If the 7 is the same or better than the 6, and I suspect it will be, then its well worth looking at for what you want.

I have the TZ6 and it's a corker! Great little camera. TZ7 had HD vid.

Panny Lumic LX3 would be a good compact that has manual features and built in lens. Or if you want to buy exactly the same camera but with a little red Leica badge then there's the Leica Dlux-4 at £200 more!!!

I've got a Nikon Coolpix P5100 and it's well worth considering. It's been superseded now (think the new model has GPS so you can tag shots with your location). It's a bridge camera, so has aperture and shutter priority modes and manual mode. The only downside I can think of is a lack of RAW.
