Ugh, My computer has died :(

A couple weeks ago my main storage disk had a problem. It went scrape and stopped working, thankfully it worked again after some time out.

Now my main boot disk has done the same thing, it started off with the storage disk, but I think it was actually the boot disk all along today.

My disks are old and ive been meaning to upgrade so I ordered a few toys today.
The spending never seems to end....
So much for buying some lights and a 50mm

also since ive ordered 2 disks, mobo, cpu and fan im going to have problems with a fresh install of vista since I have the OEM version. I used to be able to phone MS up with XP and just say ive upgraded, can I have a new code. Does this still work with vista?

Yes you call microsoft and they direct you to a msdos screen with all the details and from there the give you numbers and codes to put in and hey presto vista then indexes you new setup and you can then register it


OH forgot they do re direct the call to the USA and its quite lengthy so set up international calls first my call was only 70p but ...just in case

Strictly speaking according to the licence agreement you can only ever install OEM vista on one MB, you can only re-licence it if the MB has gone pop. It's a rather stupid system as it's punishing people who've gone out and bought the software but doesn't cause problems for pirates.

Having said that, just phone them up & they'll sort you out, just remember if they ask you why it's because of a dead MB

*oh and it will autoregister on the internet if connected otherwise it's a freephone number

I reinstalled after a processor upgrade and it noticed the change right away so i did a format and reinstall only to be told it wouldnt register so rang microsoft up and had to go through the rigmarole of the MSDOS screens changing serials ect

It made me re-register after adding 2Gb of memory :bang:

All systems like this do is annoy the **** out of people who've bought it :shrug:

The problem being if you change to many parts in your p.c. the registration realizes that its not the same spec and then you have a problem as it dosn't recognize it against the original settings sent, just cause its in the same case if you have changed most of the internal parts its not really the same pc and the licence is for one pc and not transferable

Theres always a workaround for this problem

I have had a spell of buying mainboard bundles from Maplins and building them up.Then having to activate them. I prefer XP to Vista, so having 2 XP discs I activate them MS asks me for the code and I duly entered same. I think you are only allowed about ten activates then they tell you "no more". So I tried to activate Vista. You do not have to enter any codes they just reply " successfully activated" and thats it.
