Uh oh... Lens problems

A moth landed on my floor a short while ago so I decided to get a photo of it (was a white insect similar to a daddy long legs), used the 70-200 for a few shots then got my 17-50 and stuck that on. Error 99... :(

Swapped it back with the 70-200 and nothing wrong, 17-50 on and Error 99. Each time I put it on the camera it makes a noise (a bit like trying to focus for a split second) even when the camera is off and it's changed to MF.

I'm guessing this is definately a problem with the lens?

It was bought used only lat week, the seller getting it from a shop and it's still in warranty there. Thing is their website says the warranty is only for the person that purchased from them. How strict are they about it does anyone know? Will I have to contact the seller and see if he can help?
 
Have you cleaned the contacts? Pencil eraser will do.

Well, now that they know that the lens has changed hands, I'd imagine trying to "pull a fast one" won't work...;)
 
Just tried that (although the didn't look dirty) and nope.

I also had a look inside the lens as I stuck it on. Looks like the aperture is trying to change, getting wider and then clicking back to the smallest.

Haha well yeah there is that. :p

Nothing can really be done with that though if I actually want any questions answered!

Could always do a workaround and "sell" it back to the person that sold it to me... Still the same person who the warranty belongs to. :p
 
How odd :shrug:

does it have an aperture ring? I thought all modern lenses were entirely electronically controlled with the aperture being opened and closed from inside the lens... unless there is an otherwise mechanical connection from the body that I don't know about I can't understand why it's doing that.
 
Nope fully auto lens. Only taking the battery out stops it doing it, then putting the battery back in (with lens on) it instantly makes the noise. I assume it's some kind of automatic check the camera does with the lens and one part of the lens has gone wrong maybe?
