Another 'which camera' topic

Sorry guys but just after a quick bit of advice here, trust me ive searched long and hard through the forums prior to posting :bonk:

Basically, I have decided to spend <£300 on my first 'proper' camera as I dont want to risk buying something but not getting the use from it.

I will also be buying new as I had a previous dis-heartening experience with a 2nd hand camera (luckily it was from a friend so had a refund)

So its come down to a Panasonic lumix Fz38 (bridge cam)

or a base model dslr (somthing like the Olympus E420)

Basically, am I always going to get better shots (with practice of course) from a dslr than a bridge cam? even if it is the cheapest dslr I can find?

Just in a predicament now, was about to buy the lumix but yet again im undecided, it just seems that when looking on sites like Flickr, the shots from the dslr's always seem to have that extra 'wow' factor...

Any help VERY much appreciated :bonk:

depends what you're going to shoot, all bridge cameras have shutter lag, if you want to shoot motorsport this will be a problem, they also have limited depth of field due to the slow lenses fitted to them, the other side of the coin is there's no point in having a DSLR if you think I can't be bothered to take it out because it's too big.

Yes you will get better shots but a DSLR can be a bottomless pit of upgradeitus :D

upgradeitus is a worry haha :p

I think id be shooting quite alot of low-light / night shots as its what im kind of into, car shots (mostly static though) in places like multi story car parks at night :) (not sure if that helps)

Always a daunting thing when you upgrade JD, however whilst I have had no experience with a bridge camera there are some fantastic one out there nowadays, just bear in mind that a lot of the Wow pictures are a combination of good glass, good editing skill and that all important experience. If you go for a DSLR you have a platform to build off of. But that in turn could tempt you to upgrade again further down :bang: Have you tried going into a shop and comparing any models yet?

Dont know if this is of any help but when you said low light/night shots it reminded me of the Panasonic FZ18 i once had and one problem i had was a lot of noise when used in the aforementioned conditions, this may have been a fault of the operator more than the camera has i had just started out on the photography malarky, but thought i would bring it to your attention

Thats my biggest concern ^^

Really dont want a camera thats noisy in low light :(

Went for the lumix in the end folks, all reviews seem to rate it very highly and as the best camera you can get (unless you step up into dslr territory)

Arrived today so will have a play soon :)
