"Ultra" External hard drive not working

Hi all,

my Ultra Mini Portable Disk of 200Gb has stopped working. I have tried putting the plug into a different socket, but it is still now working. It was fine on Monday, which was the last time I used it. Does anyone know what I should do?

1) have you got a power or activity light showing

2) have you tried it in a different computer

also try another lead. they are normally generic USB cables and can be swapped with ones from cameras etc.

Is it in warranty? Does the warranty include transferring your data to a replacement? Have you got backups for the data on it?

If you have concerns about the above, your best option would be to fit the drive in a desktop or replacement caddy.

In future, backup to two or more external drives, replacing when necessary and copying the old backup to the new drive. With luck, both (or all) external drives won't fail at the same time...
