Ultra slim Windows XP pro.

Just recently I've been experimenting with nlite which allows you to modify your XP disk to slim it down and make it fully automatic.

Well my installation now takes about 13 minutes to do a clean install and takes up a very small 1.2GB on my HD.

I no longer have to put in the activation code, region details etc - all I do is put in the disk, tell it where to install the OS and that's it.

It also installs IE8 and ALL my drivers for my PC!

And sets my PC to the Classic style, sets the display to exactly what I want and also gets rid of a lot of stuff like the search "dog" and the tour.

And any time I have to do a clean install in future it's a piece of cake.

If you're into that you should try looking up Fred Vorck's website.

You may not necessarily want to remove IE from your system completely but the stuff you learn by reading his processes is definitely worth it.

I've been doing it for a few years on netbooks and really works great! Well worth exploring if you are at a premium for space, have a lower spec machine or simply like fiddling under the bonnet!

Well it's certainly a lot easier than having to re-enter the same data all the time.

But has a few odd side effects - I removed the Windows Update section and a lot of other stuff and when I went to the Microsoft update site I couldn't get on!

I was sent to another page altogether so I don't think Windows recognises it any more - or it's really peed off with what I've done!

And it no longer warns me if I already have another CP on the system - just allows me to go ahead and install it where I want.

It also no longer tries to prevent me from putting one installation with another on the same partition - I managed to do this and it acted as if there were 2 operating systems on the same partition and gave me a choice of picking one or the other - one ran OK but the other was really slow - very odd!

And a complete clean install now takes just under 13 minutes and that includes all the drivers for my PC.

Also logging on and shutting down is now much quicker even with about 30 or so programs loaded.

Logging on now takes about 30 secs and shutting down about 15 secs and that's not on a very fast machine.
