Looking at samyang 14mm for canon, at under £300 seems like a steal, from the photos i've seen from it etc. Obviously the only drawback is the manual focussing, not sure how difficult that will be at such a short focal length. (any comment on personal experience very welcome)

I have rent a canon 14mm 2.8 and WOW that lens really is great If only i could afford/justify it. saw a canon 15mm sell on here very recently. for £400. so maybe that would be a good shout. Also quite interested in the 16-35mm canon, as i'm sure the flexibility in focal length co8ld be very useful!!!

Any comments and suggestions very welcome... Thanx!

Your only autofocus options at that focal length are the 14mm Canon (nice price!), 8-15L (nice price too) or the Sigma 12-24. The 12-24 gives crazy wide images and is OK quality but you do need to stop it down to get the best out of it. I have that and the 17-40L and unless I want wider than 17mm, I use only the Canon.

I've just bought a Samyang 7.5mm fisheye for my MFT GX1. I'm very happy with the build quality and optics, so wouldn't have a problem with a 14mm (I have thought of swapping the 12-24 for a 14mm Samyang on more than one occasion).

It's OK from f/8, while canon from f/2.8, but then the price difference is also of the same magnitude.

I wouldn't worry _too_ much about this, as with Wide Angles the DoF is HUGE.. at F4, if the focal point is more than 5 1/2 feet in front of you it extends to Infinity, at a more realistic F8 its less than 3 feet...! :gag: Of course, to make Wide Angles shots interesting you need to have some foreground objects, but that's a matter for experimentation and experience! Same applies to FishEyes btw.

I could be talking out of my hat, as I've always had AF WA's, but I am thinking of getting the Samyang 14mm to compliment the (Nikon) 16-35 which is AF, and the MF aspect doesn't worry me at all, as I'd only be using it for carefully composed shots anyway...
 
Depending on what you're shooting I reckon you could leave it on infinity and it would be fine 98% of the time - have a look at dofmaster to see what I mean. If you use the hyperfocal distance it matters even less. At f/4 focussed at 1.65 metres away everything beyond 83cm should be acceptably sharp.
 
Instead of hyperfocal you could always use the resolution based approach and set your aperture based upon the size of object you want to resolve, the size being the focal length divided by the aperture, which at (for example) 14mm will give less than 2mm (1.74mm according to the maths) at f8. F6 would be enough for 2mm.
