Hey guys. Ive took a massive liking to street photography, like more than anything else. And well.. 3 weeks ago i bought a 70-200mm 4.0L Im not really using it..

I was thinking i should sell that then upgrade my 50mm 1.8 to the 1.4 and then either save the rest of the cash for a 24mm or get a flash. But im also thinking of getting a good polarising filter for the 1.4? The reason behind the 50mm is i love doing Candid Portraits!!

Any suggestions?

Surely a Cpl is not going to add anything here and actually be a disadvantage adding at least an extra F stop and time fiddling?

Sorry im not sure what you mean by CPL? But its not the extra F stop im after. Its the USM on the 50mm 1.4 which would help focus a lot fast and get the shots im after.

A CPL is a circular polarising filter. It wont actually give you an extra F stop but take one away from you because it will allow less light onto your sensor.

The reason for the polarising filter was because i take a lot of picture of people in public through the window, and sometimes i get a lot of reflections off the glass.

Firstly i'm not sure why you're considering selling a lens you've only "not used" for 3 weeks, when secondly i'd have thought a 70-200 F4 would be great for street photography anyway?

A 50 1.8 plus a 70-200 sounds like a great focal length combo for street photography.
With what you're planning, a single 50 1.4 won't change your photos or the quality of them much.

Please someone tell me if i'm missing something here...

The street photogtaphy i do means i have to get very close and personal with the candid. Someones 2 feet away. With the 70-200 you cant get that close and the expressions on the candids face is completely different. The reason i want the 1.4 is cause the focusing will be quicker and ill be able to get faster pictures of my targets

you stick a camera 2feet in front of my nose

2...how the hell can that be a candid shot............:shrug:
 
What i was thinking is that you can have more opportunities with using the 70-200 as well instead of a tiny upgrade in focussing speed to the 50mm.
As others often state (including myself), you really DON'T want to get close to some people and it can make a better photo if they don't see you anyway.
 
I posted on the Equipment page to get some help and feedback.. I dont expect people to start telling me im rude and what not. Save that for when i upload photo in the picture sharing part..

Thanks for the adivce mate. Yeah im gunna think about it.. Its a tricky choice for me :P

What's to explain?
My point is that if you make a habit of sticking a camera directly into someone's face you are likely to annoy them at best and at worse get thumped.
There is no need to invade their personal space e.g. this one taken with a 70-200

You say this is not candid since you asked there permission.. I did NOT ask for permission on my photo! There for making it Candid.
 
Sorry Nick but I've just looked on your Facebook page and quite of lot of the photo's the subjects are looking at you and most of them looking angry that you are invading their space.

It's not invading someone's space and angering them is a good way to take a punch, it's not really the best plan.

It's very possible to use a wide lens and get fantastic shots. 35mm is as long as you need.
 
Personally, I'd keep the 70-200 and use that for your street photography.

I can see the benefit of F1.4 over F4 for the photos, but on a personal side, I wouldn't want someone sticking a camera in my face. I can appreciate candid and street photography and really like some of the photos obtained, but that would be invading my space and I wouldn't be very happy at all.

I wouldn't be at all comfortable in taking a candid street shot with a 50mm lens in very close proximity, as others have said, really wouldn't want to get thumped or any damage to your equipment.

Thanks for ya suggestions, and i am thinking about keeping the 70-200, but.. When getting up close to the subject it gives off a different vibe.. Like a different expression. And as for getting thumped.. Well.. I have a picture of them and its a quick police job. But i understand your opinion and respect that.

Oh I can agree with the different vibe and different picture you get, just saying I wouldn't do it or feel very comfortable about being that close, certainly wouldn't want them accusing me of any harassment.

Good luck with your choice of lens if you do decide to swap

The style you use is street I'd say Nick, a candid shot to me is one where the subject doesn't even know its been taken, I like your style and think you're nuts !!! As for gear, keep the bigger lens, it will reach places the smaller ones won't, for what I call candid shots.
Look forward to seeing more, especially the one on this thread,

Haha cliff you legend :P. Yeah I get you :) everyone on flickr seems to say nice candid portrait blah blah soo.. Haha. But yeah! Your the crazy one.. Well we are! I'm surprised the police wasnt called on us :P
