morning all

im going away tralveing in august as some of you know, i myself am taking my 30d and 3 lenses.

im thinking of getting Leah (gf) a a new camera for the trip, an underwater/WP one, as she has a pretty nice Fuji F10 at the mo.

i have been looking at the Fuji Z33WP, only thing is the 3m depth limit, but i dont SCUBA so not to worried about that.

my plan is to sell the F10 and buy a new one, like the Z33WP

here is a link for said camera. Fuji Z33WP

Two questions really

1. is there a better camera out there for my requirements, or any other dedicated camera.

2. Would i be better of getting a waterproof housing for the F10, jsut there £100. or are the bag ones any good, as these are about £20. but its like taking two cameras with me, as ill have to lug the casing all over the world.

I'd be interested in knowing the answer to that too! My last point-and-shoot met it's end when it went swimming in the bottom of a boat (there was a LOT of water in the boat, never a good sign... :D).

I was looking at the Z33WP, I'd be interested to hear anyone's experiences with them!

You're alway better off with a housing - but cost and weight is a consideration. If nothing else its hard to open them accidently where as cameras like the the Z33WP can have card or battery doors knocked open fairly easily. - Camera ruined. A housing will aslo give you the option of going deeper if you ever want it.

I wouldn't bother with a bag, they are so clumsy the make a system virtually unuseable (IMHO)

yer it looks like a cool little camera.

thats the other thing, not jsut going into the sea with it, but the fact if you drop it in a puddle etc its going to survive.

is there a image comparison site, for compact cameras. like "the digital picture" but for cameras.

I have heard (think it was on here) that you need to be careful with these underwater ratings. It seems that although it states 3m depth, it may not be warranted for waves, as they can create a force much greater than the depth you are at.
Looks like a nice camera though.

I also like cobra's piccies

+1 for a powershot and housing. I had a powershot S70 and its dedicated housing, used it for 3 years or so and was very pleased, but a bit slow - shoots RAW files though.

Last year/early this year I bought a Canon G10 and its dedicated housing - very pleased, it is superb and the results are close to as good as from a D2X - not as good as a D3. BUT for a simple point and squirt - brilliant! Not bad as an out and about little camera either. I use it for professional work and double page spreads look superb.

i just think getting a new camera and a housing might jsut push the budget up to much, it depends on what i can get for the F10.

Could I suggest, perhaps listing number 220422130946 on a well known auction site?

Or is the above is against forum rules. On a well known-auction site, there is an outlet store for a maker, which has a waterproof housing for an Ixus camera at a decent price it would seem.

yer there good cobra.

it seems that the housings for the ixus range, are all well above £100 more near £200.

this is WAY to much, i can get a housing for the fuji F10 for £100, so i might just do that.

yer there good cobra.
Thank you also
I also think that you would be better off with a "dedicated" housing TBH,
if of course you budget will stretch that far.

As I said those were all taken between 2 & 17 meters with no problems.
Just shop around I am pretty sure I got mine from park camera's who were
quite a bit cheaper than flea bay at the time

ive been looking around, id really like to get a ixus 80 IS and housing but cant really be spending £200+

its a shame all the actual waterproof cameras done compare in terms of depth, so the housings.

id still liike to know how people have got on with the Z33WP

ive seen some cheaper housings for the powershot models, but its the missus camera and she doenst want one with "that big bit on the side, it needs to be small" etc etc

I'd second that.

My watch is rated as "waterproof 100m". But the instruction manual says "your watch is ... is suitable for taking a bath and shallow diving, but not for scuba diving". The reality of that "100m" rating is that the watch will withstand a hydrostatic pressure of 10 bars, which is what you get at a depth of 100m if the watch and the water are stationary. As soon as any motion is introduced, that increases the pressure - to a significant extent, it seems.

I don't know whether ratings on "underwater" or "waterproof" cameras are similar, but the safe option would be to assume they are unless you get solid evidence to the contrary.

"waterproof" are rated in the same way, and to the same standards as watches.

I always think of "underwater" as refering to housings/bags instead and these are rated by manufacturer and for constant immersion such as scuba. They do need looking after and maintanence to stay water tight

Cheers

its a good housing but not for a great camera.

i see what you mean about waterproof and "underwater" i guess there is a big difference, the one i was looking at that is waterproof means its splash proof, drop it in a pool and it will be ok, swim with it and have some fun out at sea, not take it diving. i dont SCUBA anyway, but i think id want more than 3m to play with, especially with what you are saying about waves.
