Unlucky D300s what to do?

Yes
My D300s will not now recognise any lens and will not autofocus or detect/set an appropriate aperture (displays f0)

If I leave it in the sun (or airing cupboard) it works again for a short while.

Do I

- Get it repaired, if so what is the likely cost
- sell it for spares (value?) and replace with a D7000 at the current net price of £540
- upgrade to D600 or even D7100

Any thoughts welcome, this is the second failure on this camera (and in fact the bottom left of the LCD screen is showing very slight degradation) and I have lost confidence on what should have been a pro spec camera.

Ken Rockwell posted a very interesting comparison between d600 d7k d7.1k. Not that much in it!

Get a free quote from Nikon to repair. Will only cost you carriage.

If repair is not cost effective I would get a d7k and spend the rest on lenses or flashes, they make more difference to what you take

Contact Fixation in london. They are only open in week days but should be able to quote at least. They cleaned, tweaked the sensor settings and configured my d300 and 35mm.

Worth asking.

d600 I found the focal points too close together, you may want to consider a d800 in that there wasn't much between it and the d600 price last I looked*
At least the d800 has all the focal point (afaik).

You'll need to handle the d7000/d7100 - but I think the focal points may be tight - camera pics are brill (seen the d7000 results).

Last option:
You could look to a used d300?

If you can, get the d800 though :) and let me know what I'm missing!

Maybe worth cleaning any electrical contacts on the lens mount?

have cleaned the contacts thanks. Biggest problem is that the screen is breaking up, not an issue but don't see the point of repairing the focus at some expense then finding the screen packs up after. I have also lost confidence in this camera, my other Nikon stuff has been faultless..................

/edit: typing at same time.

sorry, but since you've lost confidence, I've nothing to say then! :D

yes in many ways I have answered my own question. Will send it back for an estimate anyway and take it from there.......
