i bought a 300 GB Samsung HDD to back-up my Docs, Pictures etc

using Karens Replicator set at 9pm daily

should I disconnect the HDD after its been updated to guard against voltage spikes, viruses et al..

sounds daft - but we get a lot of hits during lightning storms on the overhead line out to the farm

the local PC builder says he get lotsa fried modems after a storm....

In your case I would disconnect it.

"viruses" dont tend to end up on external drives, but if youre having power issues then at the very least connect it to a decent anti-surge power lead.

have one built-into the power extension cord multi-socket thingy

dont know how effective it is - so if I'm home during a thunderstorm I'll disconnect the PC [and TV too]

power line is overhead to the farm....

It won't do any harm to disconnect it when you're done.

I have a super small and simple network in my house with a basic "file server" and, at the moment, two client machines - a laptop and a netbook. I store all my data "centrally" on the file server, and back it up to two hard drives, one of which I can carry in my pocket where ever I go. Just remember, a backup that sits right next to the computer is no use in the event of fire, flood or theft.
