Unwanted program startup

Can anybody please tell me how to stop programs firing up automatically, these are a couple of utility programs I use occasionally, but I know they're firing up because their icons are showing in the system tray.

I'm aware of the "Startup" folder, but these programs aren't in there.

Thanks in anticipation

Pete

Select "run" from the start-menu and type in "msconfig"

click on the startup tab & deselect the stuff you don't want :)

Before messing around with msconfig check the programs own options first.

See if there is an option that says something along the lines of "Run this program at windows start up" and take the tick mark out of this option and then click apply/OK

and after you do that, restart the machine. you will get a "you have used the system configuration utility" dialoge come up - select "dont show me this again"

be aware that in the system configuration utility, there is another tab called services. if you check the "hide all microsoft services" tab, your offending program might have an accociated service in there. When looking at the start up tab, often disabling all of them, and then re-ticcking your antivirus etc.. is the best way - as there tends to be loads of unwanted stupid start up items

Great stuff!!

Thanks for the help guys

Pete
