Hi all,

After speaking with a number of you on another thread I am looking to upgrade my camera (450D) in the next month or so, I have already got a buyer lined up for the 450 so that side of things is not a problem.

At the moment I am shooting mainly landscapes but I am trying to get into the business side of things and Im looking for a general good all rounder.
I intend doing portrait's and some action events as well. I made a good contact today for some wildlife opportunities ***, im in a real dilemma.
at the moment im taking every opportunity I can to shoot as many different things to get the experience.

I am torn between a number of options and would love some input as trawling through loads of threads on here has just made things worse.

Option 1: New 7D
Option 2: Second Hand 1D mk III

Im open to any suggestions really, im looking at around £1200 give or take.
The only lens that I will be keeping is my Sigma 24-70 EX DG 2.8 so lens's are not going to be an issue.

thank you in advance for any help

I think you might struggle to get the 1D mk iii for that price

Can I suggest if you want to do it for business that you get 2 cameras as you would need a backup. You could get a used 5D mk 1 and say a 40D for that price. Obviously you would need another lens but if your doing wildlife then you would need something longer that 70mm anyway. I have just bought a 5D to work hand in hand with my 50D.

What type of photography of those mentioned is going to be your main bread winner, so to speak, at present?

The 7D will do all admirably but its leaning is more towards sports/action and wildlife with its crop sensor and high frame rate.
A full frame camera such as the 5D leans more towards portraiture/macro/landscape.

Ideally you would have both, to cover all bases but I would suggest for now concentrating on the camera that best suits the type of shot thats going to be bringing cash in and adding the other later after you have bought more glass for the set up you choose.

thanks for the input everyone.

Having two bodies does make more sense and was something else that I was looking into. I did look at the 5DmkII but cannot spend that much at this point on a single body, A 5D Classic could be a good alternative.

what is high ISO like on a 40 / 50D? would I be able to use upto say ISO 1600 for indoor sports etc.. ?

this would mean that I can use the 5D for portraites and landscapes and then use the 40/50D for sports etc..

This would also then allow me to have a backup dody at the same time.

Thanks again for any advice in advance

I would consider ISO 1600 usable on my 40D. Sometimes ISO 3200 as well, but that largely depends on what I'm photographing. And you have to be careful not to underexpose. If you spend a bit of cash on a good denoise program (I use topaz denoise 5, HIGHLY recommended), 1600 is very usable and 3200 is mostly usable.

There is still a lot of detail, and with careful de-noising you can still get excellent quality images at 1600. That said, I don't know if it's any better than a 450D. Probably not really. But the handling is far better, and it'll shoot at 6fps.

The 5D 1 will be better at high ISO, but you don't get the same speed as a 40/50D.

I think a 5D for portraits and a 40D for sports would be an excellent combination. And if you're photographing sports in really low light, you could always switch to the 5D and sacrifice speed for less noise.

thanks for the replies.

I have decided to go with either the 40D or 50D and the 5D Classic. I am hoping to get these towards the end of the month and have found that my local store have a copy of both in stock. Is there anything that I should be looking out for on these? Im hoping that they might have a grip in stock for at least one of these aswell. do the 5D and 40/50D both use CF and what class / speed of card is recommended for these? can someone tell me what batteries are compatible for these aswell, I intend buying a few replacements for both.

I might also be looking to upgrade to a bag that will take two bodies and the associated lens's etc.. what would people recommend? I would prefer a backpack if possible.

thanks in advance

I used Sandisc Extreme 3 cards in mine. Plenty fast enough. Used compatible batteries without any problems, look for high performance 1600 mAh or thereabouts.

Not sure the 5d benefits that much from super fast cards. Mine seems to take a 15 or so at 3fps using a sandisk extreme before dropping to 1fps. Always found this adequate for it's use (especially if you have a 40d as well which is where I'd spend money on the card)
