I'm finally in a position to upgrade my kit.
I want to get a 7D and also upgrade at least one lens.

Now, I can't decide whether to sell my Tamron 17-50 f2/8 VC and get a Canon 17-55 IS f/2.8 or sell my Tamron 18-270 VC and get a Canon 70-200mm f/4 IS.
I would prefer to go for a 70mm-300mm but the cost of the 70-300mm f4.5-5.6 DO IS USM is off putting as it is not an L lens.
It might perhaps seem a bit silly selling my Tamron 17-50 and get a Canon 17-55 but this is a lens I’ve a wanted for quite some time.

I know a lot of people are not keen on super zooms but I’ve been happy with the Tamron 18-270 on my 450D and 40D.

But of course the question is how well this lens would perform on a 7D.

I could of course keep the 40D and get both lenses but the new AF system on the 7D has me very interested in getting one.

My overall thinking is keep the Tamron 17-50 as this will probably perform better on a 7D than my Tamron 18-270.

Over to you :)

So much depends on how much kit you want to carry around with you. As the 18-270 covers most eventuallities, but the 17-50 & the 70-200 are a bit more dedicated to one thing, so you'd need to carry both.

Personal opinion, don't see the point of trading in the 17-50 tamron just to get the equivalent Canon, but i would change the 18-270 for the 70-200mm. The super zooms can be very handy, particularly as a travel lens where weight is an issue, but the image quality of the 70-200 is superb (particularly with regard to distortion at the extremes. I've got the 70-200 f4 L (non IS) and am very pleased with it.

Re using the 18-270 on the 7D. Am sure for most things it will perform the same as on your 40D, just may not be quite a sharp if you were to exploit the extra pixel count on the 7D and crop in tight. BUt on full size images I doubt you'd seen any difference.

Am also tempted to upgrade from my 40D to a 7D, but also would like a FF body, so am sittign tight to see if a 5D Mk3 appears in the next year or two - hopefully with a similar Af system to the 7D. But that would be expensive....

Hey Darran, long time no speak.

Can I ask, is the Tarmon 17-50 not living up to your expectations? After my second attempt with it I gave up and went for the 17-55, and don't regret it at all, but I made the decision early on and got a full refund on the Tamron. Although I find the Canon performs better, is it really worth the loss of selling the Tammy to upgrade only months after you bought it? If you're satisfied with it now, I'd wait for a while longer before getting rid of it.

Hi Nifkin :)

I'm not dissapointed with the Tarmon 17-50, I've wanted the Canon 17-55 before I bought it the Tamron.
Now I am in a better financial position to buy the Canon, I'd like to get one.
Obviously if I have to take massive loss on the Tamron I would have to consider it carefully.

I'd keep hold of the Tammy for now then!

I wouldn't hesitate for a second to swap 18-270 for a nice 70-200 f/4 IS or even non-IS. The difference is staggering.

I've been giving this some thought and I think this is the route I intend on taking.
I think I would be happier with my first L lens having this type of focal length.

The Tamron 17-50 and the 70-200L would make a superb combo
