I'm thinking of maybe upgrading from my kit lens in the next couple of months. I want to keep the budget as low as possible however.

After some thought I think what would be of most use for me is a faster lens, especially as I will be helping out at a wedding soon and will appreciate being less reliant on my flash & being able to achieve a nice professional looking blurred background.

Currently the top of my shortlist is

Tamron SP AF 17-50mm F/2.8 XR Di II LD

which I figured could be fould for just over £200 if i keep an eye out for good deals over the next month or 2.

I had a play with the stabalised version I jessops and thought it was pretty good, I was wondering If anyone here has played with the VC & the non VC versions and seen if it really makes enough difference to justify the extra spend?
 
Well the non IS is certainly a better lens than the IS (VR) version of that lens (superior image quality) and would definitely be a leap up from your 18-55mm, especially for indoor / low light situations.

You think the non VR version is better than the more expensive VR version?

From the reviews, the image quality of the VR isn't as good as the non IS.
