Upgrade from 550D

After a little help, i am thinking about upgrading my Canon 550D.... i have been looking at the 7D and 5D
i am pushed more towards the 7D

Looking to buy new..... dont like the idea of second hand.

Any advice would be a great help.

It would help to know what you shoot? Portraits, landscapes, sports etc.?

Also help to know what lenses you currently have? Some of them might not work with a full frame 5D e.g. Canon EF-S lenses

I would say based on your current most recent work and current lens line up I'd be inclined to suggest the 7D as both your short and longer zoom lens are EF-S mounts and as such no use on a 5D also you have to consider if you think need the benefits of Full Frame, personally I can say I'm loving the upgrade to full frame from a crop sensor, but it's costing me a fortune as I now am looking at improving my lens to suit the quality of the body

I have a few friends that shoot with the 7D and all are happy with it

I know the 7d is bigger than the 550d, having held it in the shop it felt better to hold than my current camera. :bonk:

Well you can have a little play with the 5D at TP con if you like

If you fancy a change then why not, but if you're shooting lanscapes and long exposure, your 550D will be just as good as the 7D IQ wise.

You won't need it's AF system for what you're doing.

I own the 7D and love it, but your 550D will do the same in your area of interest.

I suppose there may be some weather sealing improvements on the 7D, but that's about it.

If you like and prefer the feel of the 7D in your hands, and you'd like one, you'll get no argument from me there

the weather sealing is what i was looking at. I have also been looking at some L lenses.

looks like there are pros and cons for both.

from what i can work out if i went for the 5D (full frame) none of my current lenses would be suitable.
but all future lenses purchased for the 5D would fit the 550D?

For landscapes - looking like the 5D it the best option?
For situation where i would like more zoom the crop sensor 550d / 7d would be better.

That is correct, EF-S won't fit the 5D, so is going to an added expense along with the upgrade body cost...


What are you going to do with your 550D - if you are keeping it, then you will have the crop factor available to you as a 2nd body, should you need it, will also allow you to carry on with most of your "other photography" whilst you have restrictive lenses available for the 5D, whilst you build up your lenses.

i was looking to buy the 24 x 105 f4 L, this is about £900.00.
If i got the 5D Mii this lens comes with it, so it would mean the cost of the camera would be about £1,300.00.

I want to stop smoking and i feel that if i have a target to aim for (being a new camera) i will help me.:bonk:

Not sure what their price of the 5D & lens is - might be worth a look

Can you live with the nasty noise and jaggies you'll get from a 7D. 7d fine for 6x4s though if that's a you want or never shoot above ISO400.

Sorry to butt in but this is also a subject of interest to me.

Are you able to elaborate on what you mean about the noise and jaggies from a 7D that (presumably) you don't suffer from with a 5D (mkII i'm guessing)

Slightly over exaggerating there, and as you know this is a result of the smaller sensor.

I'm sure some of these would be fine larger than 6x4.

However it depends if you appreciate you want the 7D for the superior autofocus and all of it's strengths etc etc, can't be having another 5DII vs 7D debate!

It's not a full frame camera, yes IQ is better on the 5DII, however the 7D certainly has it's strengths.

Horses for courses etc.

Bear this in mind when making your decision.

I swear my 550D has better image quality than the 7D I borrowed last weekend. The 7D seamed noisier. I didn't do a direct comparison but the 7D at ISO 400 was not very nice. Spent most of sunday shooting at ISO 320 on my 550D and it seams noticeably better. The AF of the 7D is much better though for shooting fast sports.

I didn't realise what a PoS camera the 7d was, I'd better go round collecting in all those 30 x 20 wall portraits and 20" wide wedding albums back from my happy customers.

The shame!! What will I tell them - My insurance company are going to kill me.

I happily print 20" and bigger prints from the 7d shot at any ISO that will give me the shot. Not one actual fare paying customer has ever mentioned 'jaggies' or 'nasty' backgrounds they're happy with the great products I deliver.

Thought I was just me, I have had 900 x 300 panoramic prints done from my 550d, if your using a 7d for weddings with no issues you have answered my question. But I do hear on the vine rumours re a possible 7d mk ii.

funny you should mention that
my 600d was producing better images than the 7d I was stitched with off ebay spent all bank holiday week end messing with settings etc on the 7d and the 600d just popped out better images IMO
maybe it was me just not used to it
It's been sent back for a refund now as it was high mileage and battered

you are happy with the output of your 7D and so are your lay customers. I'm not you or your lay customers and I don't like the output of the 7D. My brother and his business partner are terrible photographers with terrible PP skills and just upgraded to a Nikon D7000 from a canon 500D...

They went a whole year on that 500D selling large prints in all ISO's.

Selling photos is easy and has little to do with IQ evidently. Selling photos for good money is hard...
