Upgrade from 550d

Hi,

I currently have the 550d and have taken some wonderful photos, but i'd like to upgrade the camera.

The lens i use mainly is the 70-200mm f4L IS, so optically its a very good lens, but now i'd like a camera that has a better sensor, is good for wildlife photography (more accurate at focusing) and is an overall upgrade from the camera i have.

I was looking at the 7d but then discovered it has the same sensor, so image quality will be pretty even keel won't it? I love the feel of the 7D, it has a really good grip, so something that size?

I can't afford the 5dmk3 as that is out of my price range, so maybe something priced in between the 2 will be my absolute maximum i can afford.

Thanks

Any suggestions?

6D?

People laugh at 6D's single cross type AF point. But when it auto focuses better in low light than their fancy multi-point system, they stop being so smug.

Yes, multi-point systems track subjects better. But considering you've managed fine with 550D, 6D will certainly be an upgrade in every way, including the AF system.

or wait for 70D or 7D mark 2. They are rumoured to have a new sensor. I agree with you, it's pointless to spend the money to upgrade to the same sensor, in fact I'd go as far as saying going crop to crop is pointless, unless it's more than 5 years apart.

To be honest the 7d , 60d etc can get superb results, you will find insane amount of topics on image quality etc but in reality do you "need" a big full frame sensor?

Is the image quality a problem on the 550d?

I have seen and taken some stunning pictures on 7d's, 60D's and even the 550d etc.

The 7d and 60d are far quicker superior cameras with regards to feel and use than a 550d even if the sensor is the same, the focussing etc is 10x.

I wouldn't personally say its a pointless upgrade, just not a phenominal jump.

From what you've said, the only real option is to wait for the next significant upgrade - i.e. the long fabled 70d or 7d2.

The 7d will provide some very useful features, such as the AF, but a significant leap in image quality will not be one of them.
