Hi

I have a Nikon D40 with the standard 18-55 lens and also a Sigma 70-300. Well I am thinking of upgrading the camera body from the D40 but im not sure which to go to. I want it to be a Nikon as I know the cameras. Any advice?

i have just upgraded from a D60 to a D90 , the difference is awesome , but the D90 still remains user friendly and easy to use imho

I traded in my D40 for a D90 - it was the best thing I ever did. The D40 is great to learn the basics, but the D90 is a superb camera. I got £100 of the price of D90 for my old D40, which was good I thought.

It may be a small thing, but the D90's ISO settings are controlled from a button on the camera - unlike the D40 where you have to go into the menu. Makes a big difference.

If you've got an extra £100, get the kit lens (18-105mm VR). You could trade in your 18-55 with the D40. Keep the 70-300 though, it'll go well on the D90.

Hard to recommend without knowing your reasons for wanting an upgrade? What do you find limiting about the D40?

I guess you need to ask yourself what is it that the D40 does not do that I want to do:shrug:

I upgraded from a D40 to a D300 earlier this year as I had worked out that for what I wanted it was the best option. I wanted more fps, better sensor with more mp for cropping and much beter weatherproofing as I do a lot of wildlife stuff rather.

It may well be that the body is fine for what you do but that looking at investing in glass would be a better option at this time. Have a serious think about what you do and want to do before making the final, expensive, decision.

Above all else - enjoy what you do
