Upgrade my 40D or not.

I very rarely go out with my camera but when i do i love it and always have fun.
Im really liking the 5dmk3 and would love to step up to full frame for increased quality, better ISO range and noise reduction as recently i have done a few long exposure shots at night and wish they were better.

I mainly take pictures of things like landscapes, candid people shots, architecture, macro and general family shots.

Only lens i could keep would be my 100mm canon macro lens, my other two would have to be sold.
Im hoping the 5dmk3 would spur me on to get more into it all i plan on joining a local camera club as well.

So would it be a big upgrade, or is there something else i should be looking at?

I would try and use your current camera more, join a camera club with your current camera as if you are not using it much what is the point of having a more expesnive camera to not use much?

I suppose it all depends if the improvements you are after in IQ, noise etc,. are worth £2000...
 
sounds like you are not at the upgrade point yet, I would join a club first with the kit you have...

have a look what other users achieve, look at the EXIF see which lenses were used..

yes looking at the 'getting a new camera will encourage enthusiasm' psychology is an option but it might work against you, get the most out of the 40d first, look at your lenses, could they do with an upgrade?
 
Alternatively you can upgrade in steps.

The original 5D is a very good camera and now can be had for around £400.
Yes high iso would not be that much better than the 40D but it's a first step into getting you moved to full frame range of lenses.

The main reason I say try the 5D classic first, is that you will find your money is better invested in good lenses which de-value a lot slower than bodies.
 
If you have the money now then go for it, you might not be able to afford it again in 12 months or whenever.
 
Thanks for the feedback, i dont have too many lenses a tokina 11-16 and a sigma 17-70 os.
My canon 100mm will work on FF so that would stay.

I think i will just join the club and see how it goes. Any future lenses i buy will be FF ones, maybe a 70-200 is on the cards for some of the motorsport events i go to.

I really need to sign up to flickr as well, seems everyone uses it.
 
I was in a similar situation to you (upgrading from a 50d), and like Ricky mentioned above, I decided to go for a 5d classic to start with given how cheap they can be had now. I love it, I would really like a 5dIII but am more than happy with the 5dc while I'm just using it occasionally. If I end up taking it with me everywhere I'll seriously think of upgrading to the II/III, but until then it's more than enough for me.

+1 for me. I went for a 5D3 when they were first released and have been happy as a pig in s@*£ ever since. I sold a 7D and 5D2 to be able to afford it and it was worth every penny. I've only just got back to having a 7D as backup but it was worth going without for a while.

I've had my 5D3 around 7 months now and could afford it then whereas it would be a difficulty now to be able to buy one, even though they have dropped in price.
 
Low shutter 5D2s are now around £1000. This is a bargain and would give you a taste of FF and all the associated benefits. If you then feel you need better AF then you can move up to the 3 without it costing you much if any, as I can't see the 5D2 dropping all that much more.
If you're happy with the AF of your 40D then you'll not be disappointed with the 5D2.

Btw I have a 5D2 having come from a 7D and love it and feel no need to upgrade. But then I do use Manual focus more often than I do AF.
 
Interesting i hadnt considered the mk2, the AF on my 40D has never been a problem or something i find lacking, i tend to still only use the centre point.
 
The 40D is a wonderful camera. If it could have clean images at ISO 3200 then I would get another one but anything above ISO 400 I was never happy with.

So...I'd keep the 40D, master it and if you know for sure that you will do and want to do more photography the get the 5dmk3, or upgrade to higher quality lenses.
 
I'd invest in some L lenses. Because of the cropped range I went for a 17-55 is f2.8 EF-s lens which made a big difference. I also borrowed a 100-400mm for the Goodwood Revival and that was very sharp compared to my previous pictures with a standard 70-300mm.
